The group is interested in a number of cosmological aspects of Einstein's equations, for example the non-linear evolution and collapse of density inhomogeneities and the global geometry and topology of the Universe. It is expert in exact solutions, and their analysis by invariant methods, having, for instance, recently succeeded in completely classififying spherically symmetric self-similar cosmological solutions.

In this research area a typical PhD project might consist of:

- studying the relation between observable symmetries in the sky and the geometry of space
- using inhomogeneous cosmologies to understand highly non-linear regimes in the universe's evolution
- work on collapsing or compact objects to better understand collapse dynamics, isolated bodies and gravitational radiation.
